Shields
These
shields were all printed in a two year period, from 1992 to 1993.
I used the facilities at the Graphics Department at the Mission
Cultural Center in San Francisco California. I was trained to silkscreen
my own designs manually. This was a very fascinating and time consuming
process. My prints were very much inspired by the Latin American
environment and by the many artists of all colors and disciplines.
“
La Raza” was the theme that bonded us all. There were poets, painters,
etching artists, printers, dancers, and drummers. We all dedicated
our work in praise of our race which is a compound of several elements:
indigenous (Native of the Americas), European, and black
My contribution was in some research about ancient
pre-Columbian
pottery and weaving .
The
result was this series I entitled
“Shields
of the Americas”
